Sport

James Cook Boys' High School is proud of its sporting traditions and endeavours to provide students with opportunities that hone their abilities and foster cooperative teamwork.

James Cook's trend of excelling in summer and winter grade sports is reflected in its  success at achieving both 13 Zone Premierships and an overall second place in the Zone during 2007. The school's participation in the St George Secondary Wednesday competitions allows more than 300 boys to improve fitness as well as experience positive challenges in their chosen sports. Across both seasons the pupils are able to select from a total of 46 games, some of which are rugby league, squash, soccer, table tennis, touch football, basketball, mini soccer and baseball. Tennis is also popular and has been well representated by our 4 impressive premier squads. The students' efforts are effectively guided by experienced and credentialled teacher coaches.

Pupils can also elect to participate in the recreational sports programs which offer a wide variety of activities including weight training, tennis, boxercise, bike riding, volleyball, badminton and cricket. A range of other athletic pursuits is also available.

The boys also enjoy the excitement of three key annual sporting events:the swimming carnival, athletics carnival and the cross country race meeting. Athletics and cross country competitors have performed well in 2007 and 2008, achieving strong results at the zone level.

Another facet of of the James Cook school experience is its involvement in Combined High Schools' (CHS) events. Our sporting sides contested 14 knockouts in 2007 and the boys were enriched by both team camaraderie and the development of their skills.

Once again our Buckley Shield (Under 14 yrs) rugby league team won the Sydney East Division and finished within the top 8 in the NSW state competition. This was a remarkable effort that rewarded both the boys and their coaching staff.

Not to be outdone, the 13 and 15 years teams (Under 65kg and Under 75kg) represented the St George Rugby League District at the NSW Rugby League Weight Championships (NSWRL) held at St Marys. The 15 years team made the final but were defeated narrowly.

Many of these boys then went on to represent the school in the Rugby Union Buchan Shield. Here they achieved a similar success, making the area final only to be defeated by Endeavour Sports High in this last phase.

The school also fielded two premier winning sides in the Senior and Junior Austag competitions.

The boys' sportsmanship, accomplishments and team spirit have brought great credit to our school.
