Facilities at James Cook Boys’ High School
The facilities at James Cook Boys’ High provide students with innovative learning experiences. The school’s equipped regular classrooms are complemented by the English learning centre, library, specialist rooms for pursuing varied forms of enquiry, computer laboratories and performance spaces.
Computers and Technology
Other positive inclusions are the laptop computer mobile units that allow boys from Years 7 - 12 to enhance their classroom learning through supervised wireless network internet access.
- During Term 4 2007, nineteen new computers were installed in Computer Room 1. Two mobile laboratories, each with 20 Machintosh laptops, were added to the computing resources available to the students. New wireless access points were provided to give these users and any other personal student/staff laptop users, access to the internet.
- In 2008 this new website was launched and will continue to provide communications between the school, its students and the school community. At the start of Term 4 2008 a new Windows fileserver was added to the network providing students and staff with increased and faster storage of files. Three new networked laser printers were installed in the D Block labs.
- The school has installed a number of interactive whiteboards. These facilities are enhancing the students learning by allowing them to participate in dynamic lessons that access a variety of information sources. We are in the process of upgrading internet speed to enable interactive video links between our school and other schools. This is part of the DET Connected Classrooms project.
Music Learning Centre
Two dedicated keyboard and instrument learning centres and a practice room provide students with opportunities to participate in interactive music instruction and performance. Additionally, the audio engineering suites allow the boys to develop skills that will be well utilised in the entertainment industry.
Sporting Facilities
Our extensive grounds and outstanding sporting facilities represent another very positive aspect of schooling at James Cook. Students benefit from the use of our three tennis courts, three basketball courts and full sized football/soccer field. The school also caters for a broad range of sporting interests as noted in the availability of our well equipped weights training centre, squash court centre and gymnasium. James Cook also enjoys an affiliation with the St George Rugby League Club.
